Course Details
The CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) is a five-day course that forms part of the CITB Site Safety Plus programme and is delivered through an accredited network of CITB-approved training providers. It is specifically designed for existing or aspiring site managers, project managers, contracts managers and business owners responsible for planning, organising, monitoring and controlling site workforces. The course goes beyond day-to-day compliance to cover site-wide strategic planning, risk control and legal accountability under the Health and Safety at Work Act and CDM 2015, including in-depth risk assessment planning, method statement creation and accident investigation systems. Delegates also cover managing high-risk operations – working at height, demolition, scaffolding, confined spaces and excavations – plus occupational health (asbestos, noise, vibration, welfare standards) and environmental management, waste control and pollution prevention on site. Assessment is through active participation in group case studies and presentations, plus a final 25-question exam (18 multiple-choice, 7 multi-response or short written), with an 81% pass mark required. Although not mandated by law, SMSTS certification is the de facto industry standard demanded by tier-1 principal contractors and BuildUK members.
Certification
CITB Site Safety Plus certificate (valid 5 years). Before it expires, a 2-day SMSTS Refresher (SMSTS-R) is required to renew certification.
